Next food run???
OK, rice is now much more expensive because of a "RUN". Most of us here have already stocked up so we are not hurt.
Soooo where is the next "smart" buying oportunity before it "runs" too??? I vote "Pinto beans". Right now at Walley World they are 5.92 per 8 lb bag That's .74/lb. I don't have the Costco price in 50lb bags. Sam's doesn't carry it at my store anyway! sb |
Re: Next food run???
Sam's used to have 25# bags of popcorn reasonably cheap (I haven't checked recently). If you have a grain grinder, popcorn makes great cornmeal...

Re: Next food run???
i'd be worried if pasta went on the shortage list
pasta is easy storage (when in a dry place) pasta is easy to prepare pasta is still relatively cheap(?) |

Re: Next food run???
cooking oil is next.
then wheat, then sugar. then the bees die, and then the elections are decided by television producers..... Hilary Obamacain becomes prez.........and we are screwed. |
Re: Next food run???
I bought a 25lb bag of pinto beans at Costco 2 weeks ago. It was $14.00.
|
Re: Next food run???
My Sam's seemed fairly well stocked. There were several pallets of 50lbs Rice bags throughout the store (probably 7,500lbs to 10,000lbs on hand). About $18.00 for 50lbs and approximately $11.00 for 25lbs. They are limiting purchases to 200lbs per trip which in my opinion is hardly rationing.
Of course this could all change over night. Dave |
Re: Next food run???
Yeah 200#'s of rice is a lot... I kinda doubt I've eaten that much rice in the last 20 years!! :shocked_ma:

Re: Next food run???
There is no food shortage now and there never has been in modern history.
We, as a species, produce more than enough food globally to feed everyone. The problem is the cost. Over one billion people live on less than $1 per day. That doesn't buy much food, considering that overall food prices have risen 83% in the last four years. As someone else said, it is a DIRECT result of federal reserve note inflation. |

This is a EFFECT not a CAUSE.... and this will continue as people move from DOLLARS into TANGIBLES. Astute observation my good man. T |
Re: Next food run???
Oops,I just posted some Winco prices on another thread....Yeah,bean prices are crazy.

Re: Next food run???
this stands as the best advice you may ever find:
"move from DOLLARS into TANGIBLES" Just do it. |

I checked Smart & final 2 days in a row, looks like they are rationing out the rice. AmforPm as got me started on the converted rice , picked up 50 #s .... I have plenty of plain white, jasmine , basmanti and brown rice, the wife has been giving me hell for over prepping not real bad mind you but all the rice is pizzen her off cuz she doesn't like it....I told her if she got hungry enough she would, then I told her she could trade for something else that suits her appetite. |
Re: Next food run???
I over heard two conversations at the Hospital yesterday where food shortages and rice restrictions at Sams and Costco were being discussed. The price of gas was also a hot topic all over the hospital. People are beginning to wake up.

Re: Next food run???
Was doing my regular shopping yesterday at three different stores, Walmart, Publix and Albertson's. I just listened to the others in each checkout line and the conversations were all the same about rice shortages, high gas prices and fear of the next few months. I was really shocked at how many were discussing what we have been talking about all along. The 20 # bags of rice were still on the shelves at all stores though you could see that half the stock was gone. Walmart is out of 9mm ammo by the way, usually they have tons of it.

Re: Next food run???
I would love to do a poll and see how much rice the people on GIM have bought from Sams and Costco in the last few months. I was wondering if we were responsible for the rice shortage.:bear_w00t:

Re: Next food run???
Beans are good to stock up on. I think that any cheap alternative is going to show a big demand increase as people continue to get squeezed on their budgets.
Also starting to put away some pasta. |

I am feeling tremendous pressure with 4 kids now. I keep thinking of them crying to me " Dad, we are hungry" and there is nothing left and the stores are all boarded up and empty. The only place to get food by design is fema camps. What better way to get people into camps than to starve them and tell them a hot meal awaits at the camp |
Re: Next food run???
We are not changing how we stock the larder. The time to run out and load up is NOT when everybody else is doing it.
Remember: SELL HIGH buy low. Dollar cost average your preps along with your PMs. |

It's easy to pinpoint things that have skyrocketed after the fact So back to my question. What is still a good buy that will soon "run", before TSHTF occurs(everything will "run" then). sb |

Pinto beans were 10lbs for 5.79 at Sams last time I bought them about a month ago. I left with 100lbs. The beans and rice I'm storing now are for extended family and charity later. |

Wife visited an oriental market today. She noticed that the pasta there, packed in a 5 lb cube, was 25% cheaper than the regular stores she frequents. Not quite as cheap as RandyMatt and Agnut find it sometimes, but real close. We already have some buckets from Walton, but we have started buying some more on every trip to bucket ourselves. Regards, Haystack |
Wake up and smell the
COFFEE! I have several bags of whole beans in the freezer from months ago, and also a can of ground. Especially if you drink it, but also for trade. How about chocolate? Cocoa powder (w/o sugar) or choc. chips, sugar etc... Nothing fancy (no Starbucks beans!). I figure that anything that trades futures contracts is a good bet.
OJ futures? Do oranges grow in your parts? Plant whatever does, then. Edit: Definitely oil & pintos, too. Buying bulk really saves! Oats? |
